Discover the Art & History of Carousels

Nestled in the heart of Sandusky, Ohio, the Merry-Go-Round Museum is a captivating tribute to the artistry and history of carousels. Established in 1990 within the historic former Sandusky Post Office, a building listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the museum was inspired by the 1988 US Postal Service's issuance of carousel-themed stamps, one of which featured a figure from Cedar Point's Kiddieland carousel.

At the Merry-Go-Round Museum, our exhibits showcase the artistry and history of American carousels through hand-carved figures, vintage band organs, and rare artifacts. From fully restored pieces to works in progress, each display offers a glimpse into the craftsmanship behind these timeless creations.

Tucked behind the scenes at the Merry-Go-Round Museum, the Restoration Workshop is where carousel animals are carefully carved, restored, and brought back to life by dedicated volunteers using traditional methods. This work supports both the museum’s mission and funding through projects for collectors and institutions. While not open during regular hours, the workshop is occasionally featured during special events—and new volunteers are always welcome to help preserve these historic treasures.
